James Evans and Daniel Samakow met at the current location of James’ Beach
in 1981 when it was the West Beach Café. Evans has been in the restaurant
business most of his life. Prior to James’ Beach he managed another famous
Venice eatery, Dudley Moore and Tony Bill’s 72 Market Street bar & Grill.
Samakow has been involved in business and art in Southern California for
most of his life. He started a cosmetic company, Gruene, one door down from
the current James’ Beach location in 1980 and took it public several years
later.
A graduate of California Institute of the Arts, Samakow is a well-known
Venice artist specializing in scenes of Venice. Evans and Samakow make
their home in Venice.
